Superman and Batman are the two most iconic superheroes of the comic world. If one is an alien with 'godly' powers then the other is a human detective, who happens to develope smartest weapons on the planet. If one can destroy the entire planet in a second the other pledged his last breadth to save the mankind. If one is a combatant with no fear the other uses fear and disguise, with the help of darkness. Even though human is no match for the alien, he can still find a way to stop him. So, who will win in this battle?
Basic Plot:
Aftermath the incidents of the movie, Man of Steel, where Superman fights with a legion of army from Krypton and finally twists the head of General Zod, humans are divided into two groups. One, who worships the alien, SuperMan, as God while the other, most importantly, a Senator, wants him to be prosecuted for the various demolitions of public property, casualties and deaths of closed ones. Lex Luthor due to his eversion towards God and meta-humans, fuels the rage of The Dark Knight, who became a silent spectator for all the unfortunate incidents, thus starting the greatest gladiator match ever, "Day vs Knight"! Who won in this battle? How did Wonder Woman fit into this battle of two powerful men? Will there be a Dawn of Justice League as suggested in the title? Forms the rest of the plot.
About the Performances:
Henry Cevil has Superman just continued his Man of Steel act, neither improving nor innovating further on it. Ben Affleck became a point of interest for many Batman fans, has he was the new choice to play the Dark Night. He brought out the grimness of the character pretty well and was good enough in his fights. His version of Batman cannot be called the best ever but a worthy follow up for Christian Bale's version. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is the high light of this mish mash of a movie. The scenes in which she was a part of and the fight, were spectacular. Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor just hammed his way to the abyss of razzie glory. Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Diane Lane as Martha were just there.
Technical points:
Cinematography by Larry Fong was top notch. Back Ground Score from Hans Zimmer and Junkie Xl was mediocre at best. They could not offer any addition to the on-going visual proceedings.
Writers, Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer seemed to have taken it upon them to please each and every studio executive. While they were at it, their story which should have been a great set-up ended up being a fan fiction at best. In comics, any character can be introduced at given point of time, and then with the acceptance of the comic readers, can emerge as a separate standalone series.
But in a film, a character does need to have a strong motivation and some introduction. Wonder Woman really leaves us wondering about her presence in this movie. She was hardly set up at all before she was thrown in front of a super villain. The third act of the movie, seemed to have been extended from the said plot to please the studio's ambitions. The basics of screenwriting, does highlight a point, "Make sure you villain is more menacing than your hero", here the writers just left that to the imagination of the viewer.
Every epic battle, needs an even bigger set up and they used all their screen-time in revisiting and re-establishing, Batman whose "Dark Knight" version is still fresh in audiences' memory. Rather they should have re-visited their script to suite the inclusion of Wonder Woman. All in all they provided a disservice to all the fans of the superheroes with their 'blockbuster' script!
Zack Snyder, the director of 300, needs to concentrate on story rather than forcefully trying to push a Visual effects extravaganza down the viewer's throat. Some of the action scenes were more ridiculous as they proved to be rib tickling on contrary to jaw-dropping. Fan awaited moments like the fist fight between two superheroes and then the three team taking on a deadly super-villain were utterly disappointing. Eye catching visuals cannot supplement for the lack of strong emotional connect with the characters.
Analysis:
DC Comics had been desperately trying to stay afloat in the game, that was mastered by Marvel since quite some time. The problem for DC lies in choosing the perfect launch pad. They struck gold with Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, but the same grim take on Superman's origins did not help them one bit in Man of Steel. However exciting the premise sounds on paper, balancing two iconic Superhero characters, and building a firm set up for the Justice League, once again pushed them firmly into the abyss, just like their previous film.
Lastly:
On the whole, Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice, proves the popular saying, "Too many cooks spoil the dish", very effectively. Or in this case, "Too much of the lazy writing spoils the movie"! You can give this movie a try if you want to kill sometime on a weekend. Otherwise, watching it on TV could help you jump to those worthy moments, however few. Definitely, you should avoid this movie if you are a fan of any SuperHero.
