First Word: There are many movies in Telugu that showcase talent of the makers, actors and the writers, individually and collectively. The films that have collective excellence almost always end up being classics.. Here are some of those, to be precise 15, of those classics, where everything fell into place and any movie fan or telugu film lover should watch before they die.
Seetha Kalyanam was directed by artistic and creative director, Bapu, many moons ago. The film majorly has excellence in visual effects created by Ishan Arya, using the techniques available those times. The film is a part of course work at the British Film Institute. Director Bapu himself took some classes about the movie.
Geetanjali:
Nagarjuna and Mani Ratnam's Geethanjali is a classic love tale, and an innovative film for it's theme and visual story telling. The train scene between Nag and Girija is still popular and spoofed in many love films lately. P C Sreeram's camera work and Ilayaraaja's songs are not to miss.
Akali Rajyam:
This 1981 film, featuring Kamal Hasan, Sridevi as leads has been directed by modern film guru, K. BALACHANDER. The film created huge sensation with it's absurd theme of three jobless youngsters trying to find their feet in Delhi. The usage of Sri Sri poems in this film is meticulous and music by M. S. Viswanath is melodious and soothing..
Swathi Muthyam:
Second Kamal Hasan film of the list. This K Vishwanath directorial was a film that explored the story of a mentally disabled person. The journey of his life was meticulously documented by the team. The performances of each and every actor are noteworthy.
Seetharamayyagari Manavaralu:
This film was a breadth of fresh air for all the movie lovers of early 90's who were constantly bombarded with action entertainers one after the other. This Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Meena starrer proved that a story with basic human emotions can capture the box office with ease. MM Keeravani's music is one not to be missed.
Annamayya:
Everyone were surprised by the decision of Nagarjuna and K Raghavendra Rao, to make a film on divine composer, Annamayya. The end result of the film was something no one ever expected. The climax of the film is still one of the best in telugu film history!
Mahamantri Timmarasu :
Kamalakara Kameshwara Rao made many historical and mythological films, but the way he established the friendship within the world of cruel politricks, between a King, Sri Krishna Devaraya and his minister as well as Guru, Timmarasu, is spellbinding. Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao and Gummadi Venkateshwara Rao, proved their worth in gold in their respective roles. This one should not be missed for it's screenplay and camera work as well.
Rojulu Marayi:
This 1951 film, starring, Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Legendary Comedian Relangi Venkateshwara Rao, as protagonist and antagonist, respectively, is a classic example of a farmer revolution, against Zamindari system. It advocates the idea of democracy and propagates the popular saying, 'Live and Let Live'
Pedda Manushulu:
Legendary director, K.V. Reddy was always known for his prowess in mythological and historical films. But he is a complete director who made few but effective social films too. His, Pedda Manushulu was a highly successful satire on the government system and people who are looked upon in the society with high esteem. The satire is relevant for even today!
Sampoorna Ramayanam:
Director Bapu's love for 'Ramayanam' was very well translated on screen, in this film. Going against the conventions, the film featured Sobhan Babu as Rama, which was patented in Telugu cinema by legendary NTR. Film got many accolades and till date is best of the films featuring Rama's story.
Lava Kusa:
This film was a sensation when it's released in 1964 and still remains to be favourite among the old generation for divine watching on a 'holi' day! NTR as Rama and Anjali Devi as Sita, just lived their roles and Ghantasala songs are still played in many temples.
Devadasu:
This 1953, adaptation of famous Bengali, Sarath babu's novel, is regarded has the best amongst all the adaptations. The songs written by Malladi Ramakrishna Sastry gave a depth to Devadasu's pain and ANR's performance just brought the looser lover's agony to the front admirably.
Paathala Bhairavi:
The story of this film, where fiction, social class differences merge very well, became timeless and even today, is a success formula for many films. The comedy, acting, direction, screenplay and dialogues are the movie are still regarded best fit to these kind of films. NTR, SVR became overnight stars with this film and K.V. REDDY proved himself to be a classical director.
Malliswari:
A classic telugu love story directed by B N. Reddy is one, you cannot miss if you love films. The screenplay, chemistry between the lead pair, NTR- Bhanumathi and music by S. Rajeswara Rao, are still talked about. The pain and the agony of the two estranged lovers was brought beautifully on the screen.
MayaBazaar:
This film is a classic example of each and every element in the filmmaking falling into it's place. Huge Cast of the film, ANR, NTR, SAVITRI, GUMMADI and SVR with many others, gave memorable performances and entertained the audience to the fullest. The camera work by Marcus Bartley, Art Direction by Gokhale, Music by Ghantasala, Writing of Pingali Nagendra and Direction by K.V. Reddy everything everything fell into place and created a timeless classic.
Note: There are many more films that could be classified as classics but these 15 films have braved the test of the time and even today they remain enjoyable.
