Befikre - Plastic Glory!!
When you watch a movie you expect few things looking at the past and hoping for a pleasant present. While walking into an Adi Chopra film, one would expect the director of romantic movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mohabbatein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to deliver if not a classic like DDLJ, at least a decent film with strong romance. Here the director falters big time with wafer thin plot line trying to make it edgy racy and new age.
Imtiaz Ali is a one of kind maker in India. His thoughts and scripting abilities are entirely on a different pedestal and he doesn't make a glaring mistake like casting two actors who after a point seem to repeat their actions and do nothing but look PLASTIC. In one word, you can describe Befikre as the depiction of Plastic emotions felt more plastically with an elastic screenplay that keeps on dragging for a bit and then some more, finally, delivering one big elastic fist pump that slaps you hard for walking into the theatre even after looking at the trailer.
There is no story here to talk about. You either are in or completely out when you watch a rondom. Boy and girl meet somewhere, then decide to not pursue further but somehow fall for each other and then act upon their heart's calling in the very end. This is the same story of Shyra and Dharam here. Nothing new and nothing burning the screen as well. Even DDLJ wasn't a new story but the pair of SRK - Kajol was what made up of Fairy Dust while "Next SRK" (said by his director - mentor) Ranveer and his Pair Vaani Kapoor looks like Dust in comparison.
Many a times, I had to say to myself I am watching a woman and man story not man and man. Well look at Vaani and come back, will wait for your comments. It is just absurdly hilarious to see her going her the knife and sporting a six pack. I have no problem with woman having a body, but face is the most important thing of your body and for any reason if you spoil it, how can one support you? It just doesn't make any sense at all to watch her as a French-Indian. She is undoubtedly good dancer, unabashed in showing off pantyless crotch while dancing and can deliver a good dialogue, but it is her chemistry with fellow actor, Ranveer, that scars you and scares you to scream. Ranveer here is just there to show off his butt and make se "Stand -Up" jokes that wouldn't even be accepted at open mic nights as fillers. But he has a working gig at his Friend's Indian Bar.
The absurdity in script writing and trying to follow something today, indulging into the "Today" techniques that were popularised by makers like Mark Webb in 500 Days of Summer, just give you an example of how original Aditya was thinking while writing this script. Nothing absolutely, nothing makes sense while every cliche in the book has been employed to make you connect. Either you be an original or be a follow-up, you can't be both at a time.
Trying to induce comedy into the proceedings, along with raunchy Befikarapan, Adi looses the plot and even wastes melodies given by Vishal - Sekhar. In any other minisculely impressive film, the soundtrack would have been a sensation. Camera and Production Design are the next best things of this humungously borefest and one needs time travel machine to go to young Adi and tell him, do not make DDLJ or even Mohabbatein, because a 90's kid like me can never digest such an amateurish attempt at love, relationships and humour from the Masters.
If you still can't believe just watch the ending wedding scene, a pock at trying British dark humour which we adorably call slap-stick and I will wait for you to make your comment. Well, if you still want me to tell a final word about the movie, then Befikre is a PLASTIC Glory with substance that could have worked provided director, actors, editors and everyone involved were more creative than Befikre - carefree in their approach.
