Interstellar -A review / An Observation..

Observation

I think most of you have watched this latest sci-fi offering from Nolan. Trust me when I say I am literally a devotee of Christopher Nolan. His strength in handling emotions, complex situations and writing a non-linear sequence with at most ease never seizes to amaze me. I am one of those who waits for his films to learn or make notes off. Somehow, even when many feel like an exercise sitting through his films I feel they are satisfying. Don't get me wrong, I am all in for simple yet satisfying experience that any film provides. But a Nolan film, asks you to involve in it, indulges you in it's complex web and makes you think and follows you after walking out the theatre. I find this aspect of Nolan's films very interesting and a fun exercise. 

I am not any intellect or an astro-physicist, I am just a normal film enthusiast. What I am trying here is to convey the experience that I had watching the film and also my observations and understandings of the film.  Please click on read more to read more (sorry for the pun)[+] (this could be long .. do bear with me and spend some time if you are interested)

 As a self proclaimed devotee, I was waiting since The Dark Knight Rises, to know about the next offering from Nolan and when I got to know it was titled Interstellar and it is about time travel. I was preparing myself for a mind-bending experience yet again, like the one we, at least, I experienced with Inception.

Nolan always brings in strong emotions into his complex web structure and also picks these interesting and weird backgrounds to set them in, that you tend to deviate away from them. It amazes me how he still holds everything together and makes it a worth while watch. Enough of my non-sense? .. Yeah, Right I will get to the point... 

Interstellar is laced with emotional core and jaw dropping visual effects in a right mix that provide you a great experience through out the 2 hour 37 minute run-time. It is long but never feels that long once the film is started. The emotional bondage and problems the earthly beings are facing forms the essential crux and it occupies large chunk of the run-time. I believe these sequences let us immerse ourself and explain the complex science or astro-physics of the film for a normal cinegoer like me.  Nolan used these sequences very clearly and gave it and us time to notice the small nuances which he masterfully used in the climax. 

Once Cooper, dis-obeying the wishes of his 10 year old daughter, goes ahead with the mission, the film starts on it's real sci-fi journey. And I believe many of us, felt the burden of science from here. Cooper is convinced to save the future generations and find a solution for safety of his family too. Still, he is desperate to comeback, as quickly as possible back to his family and especially, his daughter. His plans are driven by this ambition and we can see that when he enters the water planet. 

After going through a warm hole and finding out that the time relatively, moves slower that what it is on earth he tries to urge his fellow astronauts to find the data quick and fast. But the great tragedy that it is, the planet is water logged and the data is off no use. Before they can realise this, they are stuck on the planet for 2 hours and struck by giant waves, which they early mistake for huge mountains.  After losing a partner to the waves they come back to the endurance to find out they have lost 26 years of earth time. 

Here Cooper finds out that his family is all grown up and they don't think he is still alive. A message from his daughter, Murph, who still hates him drives him more desperate to reach home as soon as possible. This is where film delivers a great message about love through doctor Brand(Anne Hathaway) .  Her wish to meet her love or at least catch a glimpse of him doesn't deter Cooper's mission. Instead he wishes to drive them to a most logical solution that is Mann's planet (played by Matt Damon), whose data is more efficient. 

But contrary to their belief, Dr Mann, fakes the data and he is desperate to escape from the ice planet. He understands Cooper's ambition and decides to leave him behind ( kill him),  so that the Plan B, that is, saving the human race by populating through saved eggs on this habitable planet. Plan A, involves saving the current human race from the wrath of mother earth and bringing them to this new home. Cooper is adamant on success of Plan A. 

Cooper survives through his survival instincts but looses his another teammate for Dr. Mann's evil plans. Dr. Mann in his desperation tries to dock his machine with Endurance but fails, and damages the Endurance. Cooper still finds a way and successfully docks with the spaceship. This is the best sequence of the entire film. This needs to be watched on the screen. 

Once in the damaged ship, Cooper finds his daughter's video recording , in which she states the Plan A can never be a success. With this revelation, Cooper decides to still make Plan B a success and hope to find a solution for himself to meet his daughter.  He pushes himself and robot TARS, into Black hole, Gargantua, giving enough fuel and thrust for Endurance and Dr. Brand to escape the gravity of Black hole and enter the more habitual planet. 

Cooper enters into a tesseract, constructed by "Them" , and here the starting sequences which guide Murph, and Cooper to find the NASA secret station, come into play. We see that the tesseract is constructed in a way for Cooper to time travel through his past and connect with his daughter and help her solve the Gravity equation which would save the current generation. He finally solves it with the help of data sent by TARS , which is studying the gravity inside the Black hole, to  Murph. Cooper comes out of the Tessaract and finds himself orbiting near the warm hole which is situated near Saturn. He gives a hand shake to Brand here. Future humans find Cooper in time and he finally meets his daughter who is on the death bed. Advised by his daughter, he sets a journey to find Brand who is setting up a human colony on the Planet all by herself. 

This is the film on the whole, and my observations are:

1) Plan B is successful .. 

2) "They are US", the future humans who are highly intelligent and 5Dimensional beings are able solve complex gravity equations to save the past generation. They placed the warm hole and constructed the tesseract, which doesn't just help the current generation but also help them to evolve the science. 

There is a lot of debate how is this possible? 

I believe Nolan took a lot of cinematic liberaties and fictionalized the possibilities to make his point. After all, this is a film in the end of the day and there are many sic-fi films which played around with the time and other possibilities to give us an amazing experience. For me, Future Humans, need Cooper to find a gravity solution so that they can evolve to built a tessaract and save the past Humans. This does construct a paradox, but provides for an emotional and moving script. A flim experience that we long for. 

They are many scientific loop holes in the film, that are tampered with in accordance to set his story and convey the point. "It can be just 'us', who can save 'us'."     

Only we can with love towards our children, our need to safeguard their future can escape the calamities and find solutions to challenges thrown upon us by mature nature whom we are tampering and disrupting for our own selfish needs. It's only us who can find a solution for global warming, for extreme climatic conditions. 

With this understanding and observation, I enjoyed my ride of "Interstellar" .. Hope you did too..
